0% APR vs. rebates
If you must choose between a low or 0% APR and a cash rebate, our recommendation is to go with the rebate. Borrowing less, even if you have to pay more interest, can save money over time, but do the math for your individual circumstances.
How to shop for Black Friday car deals during COVID-19
Black Friday has traditionally been one of the best times to buy a car, but there are a few steps you can take ahead of time — on the day — to keep shopping as stress-free and safe as possible.
1. Do your homework
Figuring out how much car you can afford is the crucial first step to any auto purchase. Decide on your budget before you set your sights on a specific vehicle or Black Friday deal. Research a vehicle and set aside time to shop for an auto loan, too.
2. Get preapproved
Rather than filling out a loan application and waiting beside other car shoppers at the dealership, apply for an auto loan ahead of time. Many lenders give car loan preapprovals online. It doesn’t hurt your credit to apply to multiple lenders any more than it does to apply to one, as long as you do all applications within two weeks. You could also fill out a single online form at LendingTree and receive up to five auto loan offers from lenders, depending on your creditworthiness.
3. Test-drive before Thanksgiving
Once you decide on a car or two to test drive, call ahead and ask the dealer if you could test-drive without the salesperson. Some dealerships may bring vehicles to your home or send photos or videos ahead of time. COVID-19 precautions of vehicle sanitization could cause a line for test drives on Black Friday.
4. Make an appointment for Black Friday
Set up a time to meet your car salesperson on Black Friday. If you’ve already taken a test drive, negotiated a price for your new car, as well as your trade-in, and lined up your auto loan, ask for the car you want to be detailed and for the paperwork to be ready so you’re not waiting around. Some dealerships will even deliver the paperwork and the car, so ask ahead of time if this service is available on a busy shopping day like Black Friday.
5. Follow CDC guidelines
When you go to the dealer, remember the three W’s: Wear a mask that meets Centers for Disease Control recommendations, wait at least six feet apart and wash your hands. Instead of closing your great deal with the traditional handshake, consider an elbow bump instead.
