2020 Honda Insight Review
The Honda Insight beat the Toyota Prius to market by a year, but it has played second fiddle to its hybrid rival for nearly two decades since. That may be changing — Insight sales have recently increased while the Prius’ declined — and body style might have something to do with it. Though both cars were redesigned for 2019 and Prius simplified its lineup, the Insight looks like a cross between Honda’s popular Accord and Civic sedans, while the Prius kept much of its signature futuristic look. The 2020 Insight stands alone as a safe and affordable hybrid that doesn’t necessarily look hybrid-y.

You do not necessarily have to pay MSRP for a vehicle. Shop around and use industry guides such as Kelley Blue Book or NADAguides to see what the fair market price is in your area.
What’s next? Once you pick out the car you want, a car loan is next. Potential lenders could include Honda financing or your bank, credit union or online lender.
Car dealers can raise customer APRs, so shop around for a car loan like you’d shop around for a car. It doesn’t hurt your credit to apply to multiple lenders any more than it does to apply to one if you do all your applications within the rate shopping period of generally 14 days. You could also fill out a single online form at LendingTree to receive up to five potential auto loan offers from lenders, depending on your creditworthiness.
2020 Honda Insight safety
The 2020 Honda Insight earned a five-star crash test safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) hasn’t tested the 2020 Insight, but the 2019 Insight was named a Top Safety Pick+.
Honda Sensing, which is Honda’s package of active safety features, is standard on the Insight. It can include:
- Forward Collision Warning, Collision Mitigation Braking System. If the car senses it is about to run into something front-first, it will brake itself.
- Road Departure Mitigation System. If the car begins to cross a lane without the turn signal on, it can brake and steer to help keep it in the lane and not leave the road.
- Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow. The car can follow behind another car at a set interval.
- Lane Keeping Assist System. The car can adjust its steering to help keep itself in a lane.
- Traffic Sign Recognition. The car can recognize and notify the driver of speed limit signs.
2020 Honda Insight competitor comparison
Not all hybrids are created equal. The Honda Insight is the lowest-priced hybrid among strong competitors, one reason why it topped our list of the best hybrids for the money. It’s worth noting that Honda also offers a hybrid version of the Accord in addition to a model called the Clarity, which is available as a plug-in hybrid, an all-electric or a fuel cell vehicle.

*Chart data is for base models. Expert score averages Kelley Blue Book (KBB) and Edmunds expert ratings, when available. Standard technology refers to features included in the lowest trim level for each model at no extra cost (not an exhaustive list). Fuel economy is combined/city/highway mileage as defined by the EPA.
Warranty. Though the 2020 Prius and 2020 Niro weren’t available at publication time, each of the vehicles in the above chart have the same type and length of warranty (3 year, 36,000 basic warranty and a 5 year, 60,000 mile powertrain warranty), except for the Kia Niro. The Niro has the longest warranty: a basic warranty of 5 years, 60,000 miles and a powertrain warranty of 10 years, 100,000 miles. Of course, if the warranty is a make-or-break consideration, but you prefer a brand other than Kia, you could always buy an extended warranty on whatever hybrid vehicle you choose.
The bottom line on the 2020 Honda Insight
The 2020 Honda Insight is a great buy, even at the base trim level — it’s one of the lowest-priced, hybrids to get more than 50 MPG and that includes Honda Sensing. For even greater mileage (though at higher prices), you could also check out our best plug-in hybrids.
