Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card Review

If you’re a small business owner looking for a credit card that can help you earn generous rewards, has a great welcome offer, and comes with perks such as free hotel nights, the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card might be the right choice for you. This card does come with an annual fee of $125, but it offers good value for the cost.

Where the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card stands out

Solid welcome offer. You can get Earn 75,000 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points after you use your new Card to make $3,000 in purchases within the first 3 months. Since participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels are broken into eight categories, this bonus is worth a varying amount of nights depending on the level of hotel you want to stay. For example, it could get you three complimentary nights in a Category 4 hotel such as the Four Points by Sheraton Atlanta Downtown.

Generous rewards. Earn 6x points for each dollar of eligible purchases at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels. 6X Marriott Bonvoy points for each $1 of eligible purchases at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels. 4x points at U.S. restaurants, at U.S. gas stations, on wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers and on U.S. purchases for shipping. 2x points on all other eligible purchases. Where the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card falls short

There isn’t much to dislike about this card if you’re looking specifically for a hotel rewards card. If we had to pick something, the $125 annual fee is a bit more than the annual fees for some competing small business cards. But if you’re a fan of the Marriott Bonvoy rewards program and travel frequently, you can likely recoup the fee in the value you get from this card.

Compare it with The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card

If you’re not sure the Marriott Bonvoy program is the best fit for your business needs, but you still want a travel card, consider The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card. It comes with a higher welcome offer and a less expensive annual fee, while offering similar perks and ways to use your points.

While the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card allows you to redeem points at more than 7,600 properties, The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card allows you to redeem points at more than 5,700 properties. To understand the value of the competing welcome offers, we should note that Marriott Bonvoy properties range from 7,500 to 85,000 points for one night. Properties in the Hilton Honors portfolio range from 5,000 to 95,000 points per night. If you’re comparing the cheapest redemption options for both, the welcome offer on The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card card wins out. It could be worth up to 25 nights for the lowest value property, compared with up to 10 nights for the lowest value property with the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card.

Like the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card, The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card comes with a variety of travel perks. They include:

  • Complimentary Hilton Honors Gold status, which comes with perks including an 80% bonus on all base points, space-available room upgrades and more. If you spend $40,000 on eligible purchases on your card in a calendar year, you can earn an upgrade to Hilton Honors Diamond status through the end of the next calendar year.
  • Free weekend right reward after you spend $15,000 on eligible purchases on your card account in a calendar year. Plus, get a second weekend night reward after you spend $60,000 on eligible purchases on your card in a calendar year.
  • Ten free Priority Pass visits each year, which can be used at more than 1,000 Priority Pass airport lounges.

One thing that’s worth noting, however, is that the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card gives you a free night to redeem without any spending requirement. By contrast, the free weekend night reward offered by The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card requires you spend at least $15,000 on your card in a calendar year.

Neither card charges a foreign transaction fee, which is a great thing for cards aimed at small business owners who travel abroad.

The bottom line

If you’re a small business owner and you and your employees are regular Marriott customers, the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card is a good card to consider. Though its $125 annual fee is slightly higher than some other small business cards, it comes with solid rewards and perks. However, if you’re not tied to the Marriott program, The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card is a competitive offering for a less expensive $95 annual fee.
