Business credit card considerations

Not sure how to begin with building business credit? Here are a few things to keep in mind when opening business credit lines.

1. Keep your personal and business expenses separate.

The beauty of having a business credit card is that it allows you to separate your business charges from everything else. Having just business expenses on a card makes it easy to track what you’re spending, and that can come in handy especially at tax time. Many business cards come with expense tracking tools to help you monitor where your expenses are going, allowing you to carefully track what you may be spending on inventory or other business-related costs.

2. Always pay your loans on time.

This one is obvious, but if you are managing several different credit lines, it may be difficult and confusing at times. To make sure your business credit remains healthy, make payments in a timely manner, and consider setting up autopay. Also, be aware of annual fee charges and interest rates, and try not to carry a balance.

3. Watch out for fees.

Not every card will suit your particular business situation. If you are a smaller business and can’t handle annual fees or massive APRs, start small. The fees and APR that come with some credit cards can far outweigh the rewards if you’re not using the card to your advantage.
