With this tumultuous year, everyone could use an easy way to make a difference and feel good this holiday season. Since holiday shopping is inevitable, why not use your credit card to benefit more than the people on your gift giving list?

Giving back is more crucial this year; a recent LendingTree survey revealed that of the Americans who anticipate incurring holiday shopping debt, 47% of those were laid off or furloughed due to the pandemic.

Every dollar donation can make a difference, and using credit card rewards for charity donations can streamline those relief efforts. With more than two-thirds of Americans planning to shop Black Friday and/or Cyber Monday this year, there is an opportunity to maximize your dollars for good.

To understand more about this trend, and what some major companies are doing to help Americans combat the impact of the pandemic, LendingTree turned to a spokesperson at American Express, as they have teamed up with JustGiving and Feed America to match reward points donations by Giving Tuesday, December 1, 2020.

All credit card holders should take an extra look into their rewards options this season if they are interested in giving back and consider how they make the most of this pandemic holiday season.

Q: What was the inspiration to partner with JustGiving this year?

American Express: Amex has been a partner with JustGiving for several years, but decided to do this promotion to benefit Feeding America in response to COVID. The idea was to leverage Amex’s philanthropic power to help those in need and also give card members a way to support a meaningful cause through Membership Rewards points.

Q: What trends have you noticed around cardholders using their rewards points for donations?

American Express: We have noticed significant growth towards Feeding America as well as JustGiving in general as compared to engagement last year.

Q: What is one piece of advice for shoppers looking to give back while avoiding holiday shopping debt this season?

American Express: Those that are looking to give back while avoiding holiday shopping debt should look into campaigns such as ours where they can multiply their impact. If a Membership Rewards card member uses points to cover a $10 donation, Amex will donate $100. That’s $110 in total donations to Feeding America without the card member donating any cash or incurring any debt.
