How to Earn and Redeem Credit Card Reward Points for Airbnb Stays

Airbnb has become a global player in the sharing economy since its founding in San Francisco in 2008. There are now more than 5 million listings available to customers in 81,000 cities and 191 countries.

Airbnb’s latest business update projects that it will have served more than 500 million guests by the end of the first quarter of 2019. Of those guests, there’s also been an increase of those traveling on business, with more than 300,000 companies working with Airbnb to help manage their travel.

Business travelers have been using Airbnb for shorter trips where they may have booked hotels in the past. A year ago, the average trip on Airbnb for Work — a corporate travel management program — was six nights or more. Today, the average stay with Airbnb for Work is about five days, and the fastest-growing segment of trips is three nights or less.

As Airbnb has grown, more credit cards are adding it and other home-sharing companies under their travel spending categories. We’ll look at travel cards with options that let you earn points for Airbnb stays.

Credit cards with Airbnb options

American Express

The type of American Express card you have — Membership Rewards® or cash back — governs how Airbnb bookings are handled.

Under Membership Rewards®, you’ll earn the lowest points per dollar spent when using the card for Airbnb bookings. When it comes time to redeem them, you can pay for a stay using points under the “cover your charges program”. It allows cardmembers to choose eligible charges they want to cover with points. After viewing your statement, click the box next to the charge (such as Airbnb) you want to be covered. Click “Redeem Now” and a credit appears within 48 hours.

You’ll need to have at least 1,000 Membership Rewards points in your account, and you must be able to pay for the entire amount of an eligible charge in points.

Cashback cards give you a flat-earning rate when you pay for Airbnb stays, and they also give you a statement credit on everything you earn.

These cards include (1.5%), (1%) and (1%).

Cardholders earn . The annual fee is . The travel category is one of the broader ones on the market and includes earning points for Airbnb stays.

But you can’t redeem those points for Airbnb stays. They can only be redeemed for flights, hotels and rental cars at the Bank of America Travel Center. Although this card comes with trip interruption/cancellation insurance, Airbnb stays aren’t covered, since terms of the benefit state that a place of lodging must be licensed and does not include rentals of a private residence, according to a Bank of America spokeswoman.

Cardmembers earn and the annual fee is . You can earn points on Airbnb spending with no expiration on points as long as the card is active.

This card has the same broad travel definition as the . But unlike the , you can use the points you earn on the as a statement credit to offset the cost of your Airbnb bookings, starting at 2,500 points.

Redeem the miles you earn with cashback statement credits or statement credits for gift cards, merchandise and travel, which includes Airbnb stays, starting at 10,000 miles. Get 5% of your miles back every time you redeem them. They don’t expire as long as your account is open, active and in good standing.

Cardmembers earn an unlimited with a annual fee. The rewards you earn don’t expire as long as you keep the card open.

You can redeem the cash back you earn on this card as a statement credit, a check or as credits for past purchases, including every time you use it to book an Airbnb. An added perk with this card is it targets those with credit — with no deposit required.

This is another flat-rate card where you earn an unlimited . The card’s annual fee is .

Use the Purchase Eraser feature, which gives you an account credit for what you spend, to cover the cost of booking travel, including Airbnb. You can also redeem them for a check, an account credit or gift cards.

Chase Sapphire Reserve® and

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® has an annual fee of $550 while the ’s annual fee is .

With the , cardmembers earn With the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, earn 3X points on travel immediately after earning your $300 travel credit. 3X points on dining at restaurants including eligible delivery services, takeout and dining out & 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases.

Points earned in the travel category for both cards are among the broadest in the industry and includes Airbnb bookings.

While you can’t redeem your points for Airbnb bookings on the Chase Ultimate Rewards website, you can buy an Airbnb gift card with points. Plus, the $300 travel credit that comes with the Chase Sapphire Reserve® can be applied to Airbnb stays.

Delta Air Lines

You can earn miles for Airbnb stays when you book them with these Delta’s American Express-branded credit cards — but only at the lowest dollar per mile spent.

Delta SkyMiles can’t be redeemed to cover Airbnb stays.

Miles can only be used for hotels, car rentals, activities and cruises. The airline has a program where SkyMiles members, whether they have a Delta-branded credit card or not, can earn 1 mile per dollar spent on eligible Airbnb stays as long as they enter their SkyMiles membership number at before booking.

Discover it® Miles

This $0 annual fee allows cardmembers to earn Earn unlimited 1.5x Miles for every dollar spent on all purchases. Your miles don’t expire, and there’s no cap on how many you can earn.

Use them as a credit to your account for travel purchases, including Airbnb stays, made with the card in the past 180 days — or do an electronic deposit into an account you designate.

This annual fee card offers points for Airbnb stays, which falls under travel spending.

You can’t redeem the points you earn for Airbnb stays in Wells Fargo’s Go Far ® Rewards website. The best you can do is either deposit it to an eligible Wells Fargo redemption account or withdraw it from a Wells Fargo ATM via a Wells Fargo debit card. If you don’t have a Wells Fargo account, you can get a paper check or a gift card.
